Christmas Eve

This will be the third year that the kids opened one present each on Christmas Eve. This is the first year that they figured out that it is always new pajamas. We went out to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner and as soon as we came home they were asking me when they could open their new pajamas. After putting them on it was off to bed!

Snow!!

and the day after.... at least 3 feet of snow piled high in our back patio.

We had the biggest snow storm any of us have ever experienced yesterday. It was very nice to relax in our cozy home on a Saturday and enjoy the storm from the inside. After lunch, James did venture out with the kids to try and shovel a little bit to "stay on top of the storm". Well, his efforts proved futile but the kids had a blast "wading" through the waste high snow and pulling each other up and down the street on their little toboggan. The kids are excited because school has now been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday making their Winter break start early. They don't go back until the new year!

Back to the Blog

Between my camera breaking, the first trimester of my pregnancy, and some very busy days my blog has fallen down to the bottom of my to do list. In the next few weeks, I plan to update it. Bear with me!

Brambleton Santa Visit

Our neighborhood does a great job at offering events geared towards families throughout the year. This is the second year that we went to the Christmas event at our clubhouse. The big highlight is sitting on Santa's lap. We love it because we get to avoid the long lines to see the mall Santa. This year, they also had a balloon animal guy that made special Christmas themed balloons. Check out Andrew's Santa hat, complete with beard, Allie's candy cane, and Abbey's reindeer.

Halloween

For Halloween this year, we had an astronaut, a whale, and Snow White. Allie was so excited about Halloween as soon as we got a costume catalog in the mail back in September. She carried the tattered catalog everywhere and was determined to be a "witch with a broom." I found a darling fairy tale witch costume online and ordered it. I also found a little girl sized broom at Target and we were all set. On Halloween day, I asked the kids to go put their costumes on for our neighborhood town center trick or treating. When Alllie came downstairs, she had on an old Snow White dress from our dress up collection. I guess everyone is allowed to change their mind!

Allie's Swimming Party

We decided to have a swimming party for Allie's 4th Birthday. The Claude Moore Rec Center here has a great leisure pool with a kids playground right in the shallow end for little kids to enjoy. She had a ball and I'm pretty sure she has every Barbie there is now. Allie is such a sweet and happy girl. Happy Birthday baby girl!!

Preschool Graduation

I have so much to catch up on. It has been a very busy month filled with graduations, trips, and summertime fun. Andrew and Abbey graduated from preschool in a darling ceremony. Each class sang a song and then each student was presented with a "diploma." I am so proud of my little graduates.

We have .....

Scary moths.. They completed their transformation on Tuesday June 2. The caterpillars looked kind of cool so I thought we would get some pretty colorful butterflies.. but no.. they are run of the mill moths.. The kind you see flapping around lights outside. I can't wait to take them to the park and release them but it is raining today and forecast to tomorrow also. Yikes. Andrew thinks they are beautiful so I have been pretending to think they are too. :)

Experiment

There seem to be tons of caterpillars in our area right now. The kids have been watching caterpillars transform to butterflies in their preschool classes so I thought why not try our own little experiment at home. I let the kids collect a few caterpillars at the park and used our dollar store bug catchers to create a caterpillar habitat. A few didn't make it but after 3 days one had formed a chrysalis. and 2 days later, look what we have!:

According to what I found on the internet, in about 9 days, we should have a few of these:

to be continued...

The Little Pool

The temperature hit 90+ this weekend! It's hard to believe that it SNOWED (and a lot) at the beginning of the month. Needless to say, the kids were thrilled to pull out our summer outdoor toys, including their "pool". They love their little pool, even if they can't move an inch when they are all in there. It will be nice to start "living" outdoors.

Two bugs in a rug.. 2004 and 2009

The other night when I went to check on the kids before bed.. this is what I found. Two five year olds snuggling together in Abbey's bed. Andrew has been scared of the dark lately and decided to find comfort next to his twin. It reminded me of the two of them together in the incubator in the NICU. Abbey's bed is a toddler bed(meaning it has a crib sized mattress) so it is amazing that they both fit. Yes.. I know we need to buy a big girl bed!

Neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt

Last Saturday, our neighborhood had a huge Easter egg hunt for all of the residents. They basically spread thousands of plastic eggs all over the grass and let the kids have at it. It is sectioned by age group so the little ones have a fighting chance. After the egg hunt, they had a petting zoo, moon bounce, giant slide, and the Easter bunny. The kids had a blast. As a side note, I have yet to get all three kids to look at the camera at the same time!

Easter Preschool Parties

The kids had Easter parties last week at school. Allie had hers on Thursday and Andrew and Abbey on Friday. This was the first time I had the dilemna of trying to be two places at one time. My friend Cyndi came and we each took a party and then switched half way through. I think they thought it was special to have a family friend visit their school. Allie wanted to wear her Easter dress complete with its matching hat. such a little lady!
Abbey made the cutest bunny ears but they kept slipping down over her eyes.

Andrew wanted to dress up too.. He looked so sweet in his little sweater.

The Pediatric Dentist... Then and Now

OK.. When we (and I mean my brothers and I) were little, we made the twice yearly trip to the dreaded pediatric dentist. I always dreaded it the most because I ALWAYS had a cavity or some other problem that would be discovered at the visit. My older brother was always complemented for his beautiful and perfect cavity free set of teeth. My younger brother was somewhere between the two of us. Anyways, the visit would start with the hygenist. All 3 of us would pile into a tiny room with one chair and wait our turn at torture. The woman would brush our teeth and then put the disclosing tablet in to show where the plaque was hiding. We would then get a scolding for not brushing well (well at least I would and maybe younger brother) The next part was the worst... flossing.. This is when she would pull out our report cards which had a diagram of all of the teeth. She would mark red lines between all of the teeth the bled during the torture flossing. Mine had red lines between every tooth. Next, we would all head to the big Dentist room that had three dental chairs lined up. The dentist would come out in his plaid golf pants and white coat and hum while he examined each of our mouths with his little pick scraper tool. Sometimes, he would say things like, "If you move, I'll cut you". I am not kidding. Pure torture! At the end of the visit, the lady would walk us back out to our Mom in the waiting room and present our "report cards" to her. The dentist would even assign a grade to us. It was AWFUL!! now... fastforward to 2009.. here is what my kids experienced at their recent dentist appointment:

We walk into a colorul lobby with a huge fishtank. The kids are instantly enamored with all of the "nemos". They call our name and we head into the office. Each kid is led to a table that has just about every cartoon character and animal toothbrush on it. They each get to choose one and then proceed to the dentist chair. Each takes a turn having his/her teeth cleaned. The sweet hygenist asks each to choose each of the following:
1. Choose a flavor of toothpaste (I think there were like 7 flavors)
2. Choose a flavor of floss
3. Choose a flavor of "vitamins" (flouride treatment)

In addition to this, they had to choose:
4. A toothbrush to take home (mentioned above)
5. A balloon color
6. A toothpaste to take home

Finally, when we left, they were each given a goody bag with the items they had chosen to take home and stickers, tattoos, and other little knick knacks. Also, when we checked out...they were each given a token to use in the "prize machine". This was a machine similar to those quarter "bubble" prize stands that you see in grocery stores with plastic rings, stickers, etc.. There were like 8 different types of toys to choose from. When we walked out.. it looked like we were leaving a carnival.. balloons, prizes, goody bags. A bit different than my experience as a child.

Ashburn Snow Day

Last Monday we awoke to about 9 inches of snow! The kids were super excited so we suited up and headed out. Everything looks so beautiful with a blanket of snow. Today as I type this, the high is supposed to be 75 degrees so our March snow will be all gone by the end of today. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

Wacky Hair Day DejaVu

So Abbey's class had wacky hair day a few weeks after the others. She wanted to wear the same Raggedy Ann wig that Allie wore. She was super excited and bounced all the way from the car to her classroom with a grin from ear to ear!

Nicknames

I thought it would be fun to do a post about the kids nicknames and how they came to be.
Abbey-my little "ladybug"
When Abbey was born, she was teeny tiny (4 lbs 12oz) and had the smallest features. Little itty bitty hands and feet, a little mouth, nose, and a scrawny body. But she also had these huge eyes. My friend Suzette visited her in the NICU and said she looked like a little ladybug. Ladybugs don't really have big eyes, but it made sense to me. It stuck and to this day, I call her that. What do you think, is it fitting?
Andrew- Andrew "Bear"
This one kind of evolved over time. For a long time, we just called him brother, then we added bear to it calling him brother bear. Eventually the brother dropped and we ended up with just bear or Andrew bear. He is such a loving and huggable guy just like a teddy bear.

Allie- My Allie "bean"
This one makes the least amount of sense but she has always been my Allie bean. I think it is a play on the words jelly bean but I'm really not sure. But for whatever reason, she has always been our little bean.
